Cool-It Plant Selector
The Cool-It Tree Selection Project provides a science-based framework for selecting tree species that will thrive in Central Victoria’s future climate while delivering the greatest cooling, biodiversity and community benefits. Led by the Castlemaine Institute, the project analysed climate projections, species tolerances, canopy performance, and local ecological histories to identify which tree species will survive—and support life—under hotter, drier, and more variable conditions.
The work responds to a growing need for councils, community groups and landholders to make informed choices about urban and rural tree planting. By examining factors such as heat tolerance, drought resilience, growth form, shade provision, carbon uptake and habitat value, the project supports long-term planning for climate-ready landscapes.
A key outcome is a curated list of climate-resilient tree species suitable for different parts of Mount Alexander Shire, helping to guide street tree planting, park revegetation, roadside management, and private land restoration. The project also highlights risks associated with planting species unlikely to tolerate projected conditions, helping avoid future canopy loss and maintenance burdens.
