Velvet Tussock-grass

A small, tufted perennial grass with velvety leaves, grey-green in colour. Slender flower/seed heads stand erect above the tussock in spring and summer. Naturally grows in grassy woodlands on rocky soils.

A beautiful grass that looks at its best planted in mass plantings, creating a fine grassy understory for a grassland-style garden or in a naturalistic planting. Also a pretty plant for rockeries. Leaves and stems are softly hairy, making them surprisingly soft to touch. Seeds will be valued by native seed-eating birds and the soft, fine leaves provide useful nest-building material.
