Drooping Sheoke

A handsome tree with weeping, needle-like branchlets and fissured bark. The canopy is grey-green and the bark is dark grey. Trees are either male or female (dioecious) and are wind pollinated. Females distinguished by their large cones and males by flower spikes on their needles, that turn the canopy a distinct orange-gold.

An important habitat tree, providing seed for granivorous birds. Drooping Sheoke is useful for a wind-break and for dappled shade. A thick carpet of weed-suppressing needles will build up over many years. Adaptable to different soil types. Has nitrogen fixing nodules on the roots.
