Buloke

An long-lived small tree with needle like branchlets, dark furrowed trunk and a wiry appearance. Distinguished from other sheokes by branchlets held upright rather than drooping. Trees are either female or male: females have decorative cones and males have tiny flowers comprised of orange stamens with no petals. Known for its hard and beautifully textured timber.

Sighing in the wind, this tree creates a unique sense of place. This is an important habitat plant, particularly for seed eating birds. Yellow-tail Black Cockatoos crack open the cones to feast on seeds within. Bulokes naturally occurred on fertile plains, which have been largely cleared for farming.
