Sticky Hop-bush

Such a useful shrub for the home garden, providing a good-looking, vivid-green, drought tolerant screen for fences and unappealing views. Minute male and female flowers occur on separate plants and would not be noticed but for the buzzing of bees visiting them. On female plants, the winged seed capsules are decorative in October, November and December – they can be orange, red, pink or purple in colour”

The dense canopy will provide valuable refuge for small birds. Also an important food source for both insect gleaning and seed eating birds. There are two local sub-species of Sticky Hop-bush in our region, both of which make great garden plants. Dodonaea viscosa ssp cuneata has a short leaf and D. viscosa ssp spatulata has a long, spoon-shaped leaf.
