Pale Flax-lily

A beautiful, strappy-leaved perennial that forms a robust, grass-like clump. Delicate mauve flowers on sprays to 1.5 m tall, stand high above the leaves (to 80 cm tall). Provides a striking green, vertical form in a cottage, perennial or grassland garden.

When in flower this species is a hot spot for stingless native bees, who will visit to buzz-pollinate the flowers, releasing pollen from tubular anthers. Can be distinguished from the very similar Late-flowered Flax-lily (Dianella tarda), which flowers in the afternoon and has channelled leaves. Pale Flax-lily can tolerate drier sites than its Late-flowered cousin.
